The second or third bishop of Rome. He is thought to be the author of the First Epistle of Clement, written from Rome to the church in Corinth around 96-97. According to a tradition widely accepted in the early church, he was the direct successor of Peter and was appointed bishop by Peter. Although this theory is no longer accepted today, it shows one aspect of the high esteem in which Clement was held. The fact that there are many documents bearing his name also shows the general view of him at that time.

ローマの第2あるいは第3代監督。96‐97年ころローマからコリントスの教会にあてて書かれた《クレメンスの第1の手紙》の著者と考えられる。初代教会で広く認められていた伝承によれば，彼はペテロの直接の後継者で，ペテロにより監督に任命されたと言われている。この説は今日では認められないが，クレメンスに対する高い評価の一面を物語るものと言えよう。彼の名を付した文書が多く存することも，その当時の彼に対する一般の見方を示すと言えよう。
