30‐101 The second or third bishop of Rome. He is thought to be the author of the First Epistle of Clement, written from Rome to the church in Corinth around 96-97. According to a tradition widely accepted in the early church, he was the direct successor of Peter and was appointed bishop by Peter. Although this theory is no longer accepted today, it shows one aspect of the high esteem in which Clement was held. The fact that there are many documents bearing his name also shows the general view of him at that time. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
