Palazzeschi - Aldo Palazzeschi

Italian poet and novelist. Born in Florence. He joined the Futurist movement, which advocated the destruction of hollow traditions, and published poetry in the magazines Poesia and La Cerva. His allegorical novel The Code of Perera (1911), with its unique structure, features an experimental style and bitter humor, and is still considered one of his masterpieces. With the outbreak of World War I, he decisively distanced himself from Marinetti, who advocated participation in the war, and from the Futurist movement. He later published the full-length novel The Materassi Sisters (1934), which realistically depicts the fading of the modest hopes of two elderly women. After World War II, he briefly adapted works from his younger days, but with the publication of his collection of short stories, The Perfect Clown (1966), he returned to a surrealist style, and his experimental spirit continued to grow in works such as The Command (1967), Stefanino (1969), and The History of a Friendship (1971), all of which are full of allegory and fantasy.

イタリアの詩人、小説家。フィレンツェに生まれる。形骸(けいがい)化した伝統の破壊を唱える未来派の運動に加わり、『ポエジーア』誌や『ラチェルバ』誌に詩作を発表。また、特異な構成をもつ寓意(ぐうい)小説『ペレラの法典』（1911）は、実験的な文体と苦いユーモアを特色とし、いまもなお代表作の一つとされている。第一次世界大戦の勃発(ぼっぱつ)に伴い、参戦論を唱えたマリネッティや、未来派の運動から決定的に遠ざかる。その後、2人の老女のささやかな希望がついえていくさまを、リアリスティックに描いた長編小説『マテラッシ姉妹』（1934）を発表した。第二次大戦後は、一時、若いときの作品の改作などをしていたが、短編集『完璧(かんぺき)な道化』（1966）を境にしてシュルレアリスティックな作風に戻り、とりわけ寓意と幻想に満ちた長編『統領』（1967）や『ステファニーノ』（1969）、『ある友情の歴史』（1971）では、衰えることを知らない実験精神を示した。
