Kokamon-in

Japanese:
Kokamon-in
Empress of Emperor Sutoku. Her given name was Seishi. Her father was Fujiwara no Tadamichi and her mother was Muneshi. In 1129, she entered the Imperial Court and became Emperor Sutoku's consort, and in 1130, she became Chugu (empress). In 1141, she became empress dowager and quasi-mother to Emperor Konoe. In 1150, she was given the title of In. When Sutoku was exiled to Sanuki during the Hogen Rebellion, she shaved her head and took the name Shojoe, but in 1163, she changed her posthumous name to Rengaku. After the Hogen Rebellion, her estates, including the estate of Saisho Kongo-in (present-day Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City), which had been passed down to Seishi by her father Tadamichi, were called Kokamon'in estates, and in 1180, Seishi disposed of the majority of her estates to her adopted son Kujo Yoshimichi, Kanezane's father, on the condition that Yoshimichi would give the majority of his estates to Yoshimichi. At the same time, Seiko transferred two estates, including Iwami Masuda Manor, to her younger brother Kanefusa, and three estates, including Echizen Imaizumi Manor, to her younger brother Shinen. The Kujo family estate was later formed around the manors transferred to Yoshimichi.
