Haircut - Danpattsu

A bob hairstyle that was popular among both men and women from the Taisho to early Showa eras. It was especially popular among working women. After Japan adopted Western culture, Japanese hairstyles brought about various changes in everyday life in general, especially among women, as a wave of improvements in clothing and hair styles swept in, bringing a breath of fresh air to feudal everyday life. However, when women began serving in the military during World War I, traditional hairstyles became problematic in the West as well, leading to the rise of the "dan" hairstyle. In particular, after the war, a movement to streamline lifestyles arose, and a light-hearted movement to cut one's hair spread, which spread to Japan as well, and the "dan" hairstyle was adopted with Western clothing. In particular, modern women were called "modern girls," and the term was punned to "danjo" (girls with bob hair). In Tokyo, it spread among dancers and waitresses, mainly in the Ginza district, and became a hairstyle for working women from the early Showa era, and in ordinary households it spread to children as well. Dan hair can also be shaved at the back or evenly around the edges. It was also used among men, such as painters, art students, and entertainers.

大正から昭和初期にかけて、男女間に流行したおかっぱの髪形。とくに女性でも職業婦人の間に普及した。わが国の日本髪は、西洋文化を取り入れてから、生活一般にわたっていろいろの変化をもたらし、とくに女性の間では衣服改良、結髪改良の波が押し寄せ、封建社会的な日常生活に新風を巻き起こした。それが第一次世界大戦での女子の従軍などから欧米でも従来の髪形が問題となり、断髪の発生となった。ことに戦後、生活合理化運動がおこって、軽快な断髪運動が普及し、それがわが国にも波及して、洋装に断髪姿が取り入れられた。ことに近代的女性をモダン・ガールと称し、これをもじって毛断嬢といったりした。東京では銀座を中心とするダンサー、女給たちの間から広がり、昭和初期から働く女性の髪形となり、一般家庭では子供たちにも広がった。断髪にも後ろを刈り上げたり、周囲を平均に剃(そ)り上げたりした形もある。また男子の間でも画家、画学生、芸能人たちに用いられた。
