The ancient name of the area along the Bay of Bengal in India, which is now the state of Orissa and the northern part of Andhra Pradesh. This coastal area developed early, and a state existed in the 4th century BCE, but was conquered by Ashoka. After the fall of the Maurya Empire, Karavella was powerful, and his inscriptions remain.
