The name given to a series of novels that became popular in the UK from the 1950s after World War II. J.B. Wain's first novel, Hurry Down (1953), is a typical example, in which the protagonist refuses to belong to normal society, changing jobs frequently while delivering scathing satire to the existing social system. There is no coherent plot, and the protagonist is a series of episodes, with no development of character or spiritual growth. It can be considered a revival of the picaresque novel (villain novel), which was thought to have disappeared in the 18th century, but as can be seen in I. Murdoch's In the Net (1954), the author's intellect is overflowing in the works, and this is why the word "neo" is used. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
