Horse-Head Nebula

Japanese: 馬頭星雲 - ばとうせいうん（英語表記）Horse-Head Nebula

This dark nebula is located just southeast of the three stars that make up the Orion's pelvic girdle. It was so named because its shape resembles a horse's head. Behind it is a diffuse nebula with catalog number IC434, which shines with light from the southernmost star of the triad, Alnitak (meaning "pelvic girdle"). A cloud of cosmic dust blocking the light looks like a silhouette of a horse's head. The distance to this nebula is estimated to be about 1,200 light years.

オリオン座の腰帯の部分にあたる三つ星のすぐ南東部に位置する暗黒星雲。その形が馬の頭とそっくりであるため、このような名がつけられた。背後に、IC434というカタログ番号をもった散光星雲があり、それは三つ星の南端の星アルニタク（「腰帯」の意）からの光で輝いている。その光を遮る宇宙塵(じん)の雲が、さながら馬頭状の影絵のように見えているのである。この星雲までの距離は約1200光年と見積もられている。
