French economist and economic journalist. From 1872 he was professor of finance at the University of Liberal Politics, and from 1880 he became full professor of political economy at the Collège de France, succeeding his father-in-law Michel Chevalier. He also aspired to enter politics, and ran several times for the Paris City Council and the House of Representatives, but was never elected. He wrote many major works, including General Theory of Finance (1877), Colonization under Modern Peoples (1882), Corporatism: A Critical Examination of the New Socialism (1884), and Outlines of Political Economy (1888), all of which went through numerous reprints by the early 20th century.

フランスの経済学者，経済ジャーナリスト。1872年から自由政治大学の財政学担当教授，80年から，義父ミシェル･シュバリエの後を襲ってコレージュ･ド･フランスの政治経済学担当正教授。政界入りをも志し，パリ市会や下院などの選挙に数回出馬したが，当選は果たさなかった。《財政学概論》(1877)，《近代諸国民のもとでの植民》(1882)，《団体主義――新しい社会主義の批判的検討》(1884)，《政治経済学概要》(1888)をはじめとして多数の大著があり，いずれも20世紀初頭までに多数の版を重ねた。
