A representative compound of aromatic sulfonic acids. Colorless crystals. Obtained by reacting benzene with fuming sulfuric acid. The melting point of the dihydrate is 43-44°C. It is deliquescent and difficult to store, so it is usually stored in the form of a salt. It dissolves well in water and ethanol (ethyl alcohol). Phenol is obtained by melting the sodium salt with sodium hydroxide and treating with acid (one of the industrial methods for producing phenol). Benzenesulfonyl chloride C 6 H 5 SO 2 Cl is produced by heating it with hydrochloric acid under pressure in the presence of phosphorus pentachloride.
