A representative compound of aromatic sulfonic acids. Colorless crystals. Obtained by reacting benzene with fuming sulfuric acid. The melting point of the dihydrate is 43-44°C. It is deliquescent and difficult to store, so it is usually stored in the form of a salt. It dissolves well in water and ethanol (ethyl alcohol). Phenol is obtained by melting the sodium salt with sodium hydroxide and treating with acid (one of the industrial methods for producing phenol). Benzenesulfonyl chloride C ₆ H ₅ SO ₂ Cl is produced by heating it with hydrochloric acid under pressure in the presence of phosphorus pentachloride.

芳香族スルホン酸を代表する化合物。無色の結晶。ベンゼンに発煙硫酸を作用させて得られる。二水和物の融点は43～44℃。潮解性があり、保存しにくいため、普通は塩の形で保存する。水、エタノール（エチルアルコール）にはよく溶ける。ナトリウム塩を水酸化ナトリウムとともに融解し、酸で処理するとフェノールが得られる（フェノールの工業的製法の一つ）。五塩化リンの作用で塩化ベンゼンスルホニルC₆H₅SO₂Clを、塩酸と加圧下で加熱するとベンゼンを生じる。
