...One kilometer south of the city is the large archaeological site of Tepe Hissar, where in the first half of the 20th century, Herzfeld and Schmidt excavated the remains of a settlement dating from 3500-1600 B.C., a palace from the Sassanid period, and a fire temple. [Tanabe Katsumi] In the city remains the oldest surviving mosque in Iran, the Tārī Khāna (8th-9th century), which has a multi-columned Arabic plan but a structure that strongly reflects the traditions of the Sassanid period.
