Jean Leray

French mathematician. Born in Nantes, he graduated from the École Normale Supérieure. He became a professor at the University of Nancy in 1936, at the University of Paris in 1941, and at the Collège de France in 1947. He is a researcher of functional equations, and is famous for his work on mathematical problems in fluid mechanics, fundamental solutions of differential operators, and the theory of fixed-point exponents in function spaces. In particular, the method he introduced for the theory of fixed-point exponents is very general, and has been developed into the theory of cohomology of sheaf coefficients and the theory of spectral sequences in fiber spaces, which are used in topology, algebraic geometry, homological algebra, and the theory of functions of multiple variables, making a great contribution to the development of mathematics.

フランスの数学者。ナントに生まれ，エコール･ノルマル･シュペリウールを卒業した。1936年にナンシー大学教授，41年にパリ大学教授となり，47年からはコレージュ･ド･フランス教授。関数方程式の研究者で，流体力学における数学的問題，微分作用素の基本解，関数空間における不動点指数の理論に関する業績は有名である。とくに不動点指数の理論に関して導入した手法は非常に一般的で，層係数のコホモロジー論やファイバー空間におけるスペクトル系列の理論に発展して，位相幾何学，代数幾何学，ホモロジー代数，多変数関数論などで用いられ，数学の発展に大きく貢献した。
