Miyazaki [city] - Miyazaki
A city in central Miyazaki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1924 and is the prefectural capital. It occupies the southern part of the Miyazaki Plain, where the Oyo River flows eastward, and faces the Hyuga-Nada Sea. The city center has developed rapidly since the Miyazaki Prefectural Office was opened in 1883, and is served by the Nippo Main Line, Miyazaki Expressway, and Higashi Kyushu Expressway, the Nichinan Line branching off, and there is an airport. It is the administrative, economic, and cultural center of the prefecture, but has a strong commercial character. It is a tourist base for the Nichinan Coast Quasi-National Park, and is home to Miyazaki Shrine, Aoshima Island, Kodomo-no-Kuni Amusement Park, the large resort facility Sea Gaia, Phoenix Greenland, the Uchinomi Myrtle Grove (a special natural monument), and Miyazaki University. In the surrounding rural areas, rice cultivation, mainly early-season rice, and forced vegetable cultivation are thriving. Miyazaki Gakuen Toshi is located across from the neighboring town of Kiyotake. In January 2006, the towns of Takaoka in Higashimorokata County, Tano and Sadowara in Miyazaki County were incorporated, and in March 2010, the town of Kiyotake in Miyazaki County was incorporated. Area: 643.67 km2 . Population: 400,583 (2010).
