A city in the Tarn department in the region of Lauragais in the south of France. It is located in the middle of the Agout River, which originates in the western part of the Cevennes and flows northwest to join the Tarn. The town originated as a Roman garrison, and the foundations of the town were established when a Benedictine monastery (647) was established. Since the Middle Ages, it has been located at the intersection of the sheep-breeding area in the hinterland and the dye supply area in the plain in front. It also has the fresh water of the Agout River, which attracted Protestant craftsmen and developed it into a woolen textile center. It was hit hard in the 17th century when Protestants emigrated to other countries after the repeal of the Edict of Nantes, but it recovered in modern times and woolen textiles are still its main industry. Other related industries include weaving machines, tools, and dyes, and the pharmaceutical industry is also important. It is also a major distribution center for agricultural products from the surrounding area. Many buildings from the Middle Ages remain, such as a 12th-century fortress tower and a 17th-18th-century cathedral, but the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts in the former bishop's palace is especially famous for its collection of Goya's works. Population: 46,292 (1990). Castor |
