A general term for devices that measure the weight or mass of objects. They are broadly divided into balance scales, beam scales, and platform scales that use a lever to compare and measure the weight of a standard object (weight) and its mass, and spring scales that use elasticity to measure weight. There are also special scales that use changes in electrical resistance or optical display methods, floating scales and gas balances that use buoyancy to measure the density of a fluid, and torsion balances that measure forces other than weight. It is not clear when scales were first used, but a balance pole estimated to be from around 5000 BC has been excavated in Egypt, and they have been a symbol of "judgment" and "justice" since ancient times, which shows how old their origins are. In Japan, there are articles in the Shinsen Shojiroku and the Matsuzo Ryakuki that state that the system of scales was established around the time of Emperor Jomei. Moving forward in time, during the Edo period, scales were established in Kyoto and Edo and were given the exclusive right to manufacture, sell, and repair scales. → Related items Fishing scales (scales) Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
