A perennial herb of the Scrophulariaceae family that grows in sunny mountain grasslands. The stems are erect and reach a height of about 1m. The leaves are opposite, circular at the base, almost stalkless, ovate with a pointed tip, 5-12cm long, 2.5-4.5cm wide, and have many sawtooth edges. In July and August, a 10-20cm long flower spike appears at the end of the stem. The flowers are bluish-purple gamopetalous and about 7mm in diameter. The corolla is saucer-shaped, divided into four broad ovate lobes, and has a very short tube. There are two stamens. The fruit is an oblate capsule, slightly concave at the tip, and 3mm long.

山地の日当りのよい草地に生えるゴマノハグサ科の多年草。茎は直立して，高さ1mほどになる。葉は対生し，基部は円形でほとんど柄がなく，卵形で先がとがり，長さ5～12cm，幅2.5～4.5cm，縁に多くの鋸歯がある。7～8月，茎の先に長さ10～20cmの花穂を出す。花は青紫色の合弁花で，径約7mm。花冠は皿形をなし，広卵形の裂片に4裂し，ごく短い筒がある。おしべ2本。果実は扁球形の蒴果（さくか）で先がややへこみ，長さ3mm。
