An old town in Oku District, located in the lowlands downstream of the Yoshii River in the southeastern part of Okayama Prefecture. The Ako Line runs through it. The settlements of Osafune, Yokaichi, and Fukuoka are located on natural levees, and agriculture, mainly rice, wheat, and dairy farming, was thriving here, but it is now becoming a commuter town for Okayama City. In the Middle Ages, it was the center of Osafune blacksmithing. In November 2004, it merged with Ushimado Town and Oku Town in Oku District to become a city, Setouchi City. 29.30 km2 . 岡山県南東部,吉井川下流の低地にある邑久(おく)郡の旧町。赤穂線が通じる。長船,八日市,福岡などの集落が自然堤防上に立地,米,麦,酪農を中心とした農業が盛んであったが,現在は岡山市のベッドタウン化が進んでいる。中世,長船鍛冶(かじ)の中心地。2004年11月邑久郡牛窓町,邑久町と合併し市制,瀬戸内市となる。29.30km2。1万2796人(2003)。
