A biennial plant of the Caryophyllaceae family. It is widely distributed in East Asia, including Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and China. It commonly grows in barren fields and on the ridges of rice paddies, and grows in large numbers on the ground in large colonies. The stems are thin, well-branched, 15-20 cm tall, green, and hairless. The leaves are opposite, oblong or egg-lanceolate, 5-20 mm long, with a pronounced midrib, but soft. From spring to the end of summer, small white five-petaled flowers similar to chickweed are produced one after another at the ends of the branches. The tips of the petals are clearly divided into two.
