A haiku poet and kyoka poet in the early Edo period. Ishida. Commonly known as Bunzaemon (or Matazaemon). His other names were Kendou and Son'an. He was a money exchanger in front of Tokiwabashi in Edo. A pioneer of Edo haiku, he sought criticism from Teitoku early on, and was known as one of the Five Haiku Philosophers of Edo along with Saito Tokugen, Takashima Gensatsu, Nakarai Bokuyo, and Araki Kayu. His palindrome haiku of 1643 (Kan'ei 20) is particularly famous, and marked the beginning of the popularity of this type of playful haiku. His influence extended beyond Edo to the Kanto, Tohoku, Hokuriku, Ise, Izu, and other areas. In his later years, he intended to compile haiku books, and his son Mitaku took over and completed his work, writing "Hitomotogusa" (1669 preface). He also excelled in kyoka poetry, and many of his works were included in the "Kokinkyokushu" and "Gosenkyokushu," and his family anthology "Goginwagashu."
