The first king of Germany of the Staufen dynasty (1127-35 rival king, 1138-94 king). He had been the rival king of Lothair III since 1127. After Lothair's death in 1138, he was re-elected as king. He fought against the Welfen dynasty throughout his reign with little success, but the policy of developing and forming his own territories to secure his base in the process was continued by successive Staufen kings. He planned the Second Crusade with King Louis VII of France from 47 to 49, but failed to achieve his intended goal.

シュタウフェン朝初代のドイツ国王(1127‐35対立国王，1138‐94国王)。1127年以来ロタール3世の対立国王。38年同王死去ののち改めて国王に選出される。在位全期間を通じて戦われたウェルフェン家との抗争はほとんど成果を収めなかったが，その過程で王が拠点確保のためにとった直轄領域の開発･形成政策は歴代シュタウフェン王の引き継ぐところとなった。47‐49年にフランス王ルイ7世と第2回十字軍を企てたが，所期の目的は達せられなかった。
