1847‐1930 French chemist. Born in Pécherbronn, Alsace. Studied at the École Polytechnique, served as assistant to AJ Balard (1802-76), and then studied under CA Wurtz. He often conducted research in a dedicated laboratory throughout his life, but was also involved in the petroleum industry. In 1874, at the same time as JH van't Hoff, who studied with him under Wurtz, he independently published a paper on molecular structure and optical activity, proposing the concept of an asymmetric carbon atom. He continued his research in organic chemistry, and contributed to the development of stereochemistry by showing that pentavalent nitrogen atoms can also produce optically active compounds. エコール・ポリテクニクに学び,バラールA.J.Balard(1802‐76)の助手を勤めたのち,C.A.
