...books used in classes for various subjects at school. Legally, they are often called textbooks. In the "Temporary Measures Law for the Publication of Textbooks" (promulgated in 1948), which was enacted as part of the educational reforms after World War II, textbooks are defined as books for children and students used as "main teaching materials" organized according to the structure of the educational curriculum in elementary, junior high, and high schools and equivalent schools.
