The island of Pharos, located in front of the city, was connected by a large jetty (heptastadion) about 1.3 km long, creating an artificial bay on both sides. The island had a double port with the Great Port on the east side and the Port of Eunostos (which also housed the fleet facility, the Kivotos anchorage) on the west side, but the roles of the two ports are reversed today.
