On August 20, 1968, the armies of five countries, the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Hungary, East Germany, and Poland, invaded Czechoslovakia, halting the country's liberalization process. Since A. Novotny was dismissed as First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Communist Party in January of that year and A. Dubček was elected as his successor, Czechoslovakia rapidly became liberalized and enjoyed the "Prague Spring." In April, the "Party Programme of Action" was adopted, which stated that the party's authority should be earned through its activities and not imposed.
