An experiment to investigate the vibration of a string, performed by E. Merde in 1859. A string is attached to one of the legs of a tuning fork, and the other end is tied to a fixed object, with the string kept sufficiently taut. If the length and tension of the string are appropriately adjusted to make the tuning fork vibrate, the vibrations of the tuning fork and the string resonate, and standing waves are observed along the string, which is fixed at both ends. If the vibration direction of the legs of the tuning fork is in the same direction as the string, resonance occurs when the frequency of the string is half the frequency of the tuning fork. If the vibration direction of the legs of the tuning fork is perpendicular to the direction of the string, resonance occurs when the frequency of the string is equal to the frequency of the tuning fork, and standing waves are observed.
