…After Poland gained independence in 1919, a Japanese language course was established at the University of Warsaw, which in 1955 became the independent Department of Japanese Studies, and has since become the center of research and education on Japan. A well-known expert in Japanese studies is Wiesław Kotański (1915-), a linguistics and literary scholar.
