Nisui-ki

Japanese: 二水記 - にすいき
Nisui-ki

A record of the Warring States period. Also known as Isshiki. A diary by Gon Chunagon Washio Takayasu. The entries span the years 1504-1533 (Eisho 1-Tenbun 2). Nisui is a decomposition of the character ei from the era name Eisho, while Isshiki is a decomposition of the character sei. In addition to describing the state of the court noble society and the decline of court ceremonies due to the dissolution of manors and war, it also gives a detailed account of the political turmoil in the Kinai region, such as the split and infighting of the Hosokawa clan and the entry and departure of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiki (Yoshitane) into Kyoto and his flight from the capital. It is a good resource for learning about the various situations surrounding Kyoto during the Warring States period, such as the rise of the Ikko Ikki and Hokke Ikki rebellions, and the townspeople. The National Archives of Japan has 20 of his handwritten books in its possession. Some of them are included in the revised edition of "Shiseki Shuran."
