This style of calligraphy was started by Fujiwara Tadamichi, a calligrapher of the late Heian period. The name of the style comes from the fact that Tadamichi, who rose to the position of regent and chancellor, lived in the grounds of Hossho-ji Temple in Shirakawa, Kyoto, in his later years and was called Hossho-ji-dono. In addition to the traditional Japanese style of calligraphy of the time, he was influenced by the emerging samurai culture and left behind calligraphy that is heavy, resilient and robust. This new style of calligraphy suited the changing times and became very popular. Sonen's Cloistered Prince's "Jubokusho" gives an overview of this style, saying, "After the emergence of the Hossho-ji chancellor, the whole country became like this, and it has been like this since the reign of Emperor Goshirakawa. This style became even more prevalent during the succession of the regent position of Kyogoku. It has been this style up to the reign of Emperor Gosaga." Tadamichi's lineage produced many talented calligraphers, and the lineage was succeeded by his grandson Yoshitsune (1169-1206) under the name of the Gokyogoku school, and by his son Noriie (1194-1255) under the name of the Koseiin school.
