French sociologist and social reform movement practitioner. As a mining engineer, he had close contact with the everyday lives of Europeans. He criticized social reform ideas that were far removed from reality and called for starting from social surveys. He personally conducted extensive surveys of working families, and spent several decades completing Les ouvriers européens (The Workers of Europe) (1855). He used quantitative methods centered on household analysis and descriptive methods consisting of detailed records of subjects as his research methods. He argued that the transformation of social relations among the people (loss of community) that accompanied the capitalization of Europe could not be remedied by a political revolution by socialists who focused only on material poverty, but should be dealt with by the restoration of the "moral economy, économie sociale," and advocated the restoration of the traditional order based on paternalism from superiors in the workplace and the division of labor between fathers and mothers at home.
