Yanshu - Enshu

...This was designed so that the amount of water flowing out was proportional to the time by letting water flow down a number of boxes lined up low one after the other. The water clock, created by Yan Su of the Northern Song Dynasty in 1030, was an advanced model that allowed the excess water to flow out to the outside, thereby keeping the water level inside the box constant.
