Western-style painter and writer. Born in Yokohama. His real name was Mibuma. He was the younger brother of novelist Arishima Takeo and the older brother of Satomi Ton. In 1904 (Meiji 37), he graduated from the Italian department of the Tokyo School of Foreign Languages. He immediately studied Western-style painting under Fujishima Takeji, and in 1905 traveled to Europe to study at the École Nationale degli Arte in Rome and later in Paris, while also traveling around the world. In 1910, he returned to Japan and became one of the founding members of the magazine Shirakaba, where he worked to introduce new European art, including Cezanne. In 1914 (Taisho 3), he founded the Nikakai with his comrades and exhibited his works. In addition, he published the novels "Like a Bat" (1910-1911), "Days in Southern Europe" (1916), and "The End of Lies" (1919). He was also active in a wide range of fields, including translation and art criticism. In 1935 (Showa 10), he became a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and the first vice-president of the Japan Pen Club, and the following year, in 1936, he founded the Issuikai with his comrades. After World War II, he served as a director of the Nitten Exhibition and held retrospective exhibitions at the Kamakura Museum of Modern Art and other venues. In 1964 (Showa 39), he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit. His representative works include "Portrait of Dr. Koebel," "Portrait of Kumagai Morikazu," "Commemorating the Great Earthquake," and "Smile."
