The world's largest semiconductor manufacturer, known for the Pentium series of central processing units (CPUs) for personal computers. Founded in 1968 by R. Noyce (1927-90) and G. Moore (1929-), Intel invented the microprocessor and DRAM (dynamic random access memory, which requires memory to be maintained). In the 1980s, Intel withdrew from the DRAM business and concentrated its management resources on the microprocessor business. In the 1990s, Intel solidified its position as the largest microprocessor manufacturer. Currently, Intel boasts a share of over 80% of the PC CPU market. Due to its close relationship with Microsoft, which dominates the PC operating system market, the company is sometimes criticized as having the "Wintel regime." Intel Japan was founded in 1976. Currently, Intel manufactures not only CPUs, but also chipsets, a group of LSIs (large-scale integrated circuits) that control data exchange between CPUs and peripheral devices, and network devices. The company's headquarters are in Santa Clara, California. The company name Intel comes from "integrated electronics."
