Andrey Rublyov

A Russian painter-monk. He was the greatest painter-monk born in medieval Russia, but there are no biographical documents about his early years. However, it is easy to imagine that the young Rublev had the opportunity to see the frescoes of the Greek icon painter Theophanes the Grec and his disciples in the cathedrals of the Moscow Kremlin. In fact, in 1405, he participated in decorating the murals and icons of the Blagoveshchensky Cathedral in the Kremlin together with Theophanes the Grec and Prokhor. Later, in 1408, he painted the murals of the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir, but it is no exaggeration to say that it is the icon of the Holy Trinity that has made Rublev's name immortalized today. This icon is the pinnacle of the aesthetic world of Russian icons, and its influence on subsequent Russian icons was immeasurable.

ロシアの画僧。中世ロシアの生んだ最大の画僧であるが、その若いころの伝記的資料は存在しない。しかし、若いルブリョフがモスクワのクレムリンの聖堂でギリシアのイコン画家フェオファン・グレックやその弟子たちのフレスコ画を見る機会があったことは容易に想像される。事実、1405年にはクレムリンのブラゴベシチェンスキー聖堂で、フェオファン・グレックやプローホルとともに聖堂の壁画やイコンの飾り付けに参加している。その後、08年にはウラジーミルのウスペンスキー聖堂の壁画を描いたが、今日ルブリョフの名を不朽のものとしているのはイコン『聖三位(さんみ)一体』によるといっても過言ではない。このイコンはロシア・イコンの美的世界の頂点にたつもので、その後のロシア・イコンに与えた影響も計り知れないものがある。
