Elephant seal (elephant seal)

Japanese: ゾウアザラシ(象海豹) - ゾウアザラシ（英語表記）elephant seal

A general term for mammals in the genus Mirounga , family Phocidae, order Pinnipedia. The largest of all seals. There are two species in the Northern Hemisphere: the northern elephant seal M. angustirostris , and the southern elephant seal M. leonina (illustration). The name comes from the shape of the male's nose, which is long enough to hang down as a secondary sexual characteristic. Northern elephant seals are distributed on several islands around the California Peninsula and the surrounding waters, and migrate to Canada and southern Alaska in winter.

鰭脚（ききやく）目アザラシ科ゾウアザラシ属Miroungaに属する哺乳類の総称。アザラシの中で最大。北半球にキタゾウアザラシM.angustirostrisと南半球にミナミゾウアザラシM.leonina（イラスト）の2種がある。二次性徴的に垂れ下がるほどに長くなった雄の鼻の形に由来する。キタゾウアザラシはカリフォルニア半島周辺のいくつかの島とその周辺海域に分布，冬期にカナダ，アラスカ南部まで移動する。
