This desert is located in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula and is called the "area of nothingness." It stretches 1,200 km from east to west, 650 km from north to south, and covers an area of about 600,000 km2. The name means "one-quarter of the void." Locals call it al-Rimāl (meaning "sand"). The eastern half is dotted with wells that can be used from north to south, and is regularly visited by nomads, but the rest is barren and unsuitable for life. The American oil company Aramco and others have surveyed the entire area since 1967, and although they have found groundwater resources, no profitable oil fields have been confirmed.

アラビア半島南部に位置する砂漠で，〈虚無の区域〉と呼ばれる。東西1200km，南北650km，面積約60万km2に及ぶ。呼称は〈空虚の1/4〉という意。地元ではリマールal‐Rimāl(〈砂〉の意)と呼ばれる。東半分には南北縦断に利用できる井戸が点在し，遊牧民が定期的に訪れるが，残る部分は不毛で生活に適さない。アメリカの石油会社アラムコなどが1967年以来，全域を調査したが，地下水資源は発見されたものの，採算のとれる油田は確認されていない。
