...the city was considered a place where citizens could form and exercise their virtu, and artistic activity was considered an effective means of this, not merely a skill, but was positioned on an academic basis equal to the humanities, which had a great influence on the formation of artistic ideals for both clients and artists in the art production of the Renaissance. His many works include "De Painting," which explains the theory of perspective painting, an objective method of expression in visual arts, and the importance of historical figure painting (istria), which represents a typical example of virtu; "De Familia," which discusses home education and human development, love as the basis of family relationships, and family economics; and "Records of Rome," which measures the city's monuments, city walls, and the position of the Tiber River as basic data for Pope Nicholas V's urban development plan, but his most famous work is "De Architecture," written in Latin (1443-45, 47-52). This was the first architectural textbook of the Renaissance, and was modelled on the ancient Roman Vitruvius Book of Architecture, consisting of 10 books, covering a wide range of subjects including the environment, materials, stonework, urban facilities, architectural specifics, architectural beauty and decoration, flood control and restoration.
