...Note that a pier equipped only with mooring facilities on a pier is called a dolphin, and is distinguished from a pier. A pier without a pier, which uses a box-shaped floating structure called a pontoon stabilized in position by mooring chains, piles, or dolphins, is called a floating pier. Floating piers are not subject to destruction by earthquakes or difficulties in loading and unloading due to changes in tides, but are vulnerable to waves, so their use is limited to calm waters.
