1380‐1459 Italian humanist. Born near Arezzo, he went to Florence, studied under Salutati, and became a master of classical Latin, eventually obtaining a position as a scribe at the papacy. He accompanied the Council of Constance and took the opportunity of his vacations to visit monasteries throughout Europe, including St. Gallen and Cluny, and searched through their libraries for ancient manuscripts of classical Roman literature. He rediscovered and introduced to the world through his fellow humanists many works, including Cicero (parts of the Oratory), Quintilian, Valerius Flaccus (parts), Asconius, Festus, Lucretius, Statius (Silvae), and Manilius.
