Italian humanist. Born near Arezzo, he went to Florence, studied under Salutati, and became a master of classical Latin, eventually obtaining a position as a scribe at the papacy. He accompanied the Council of Constance and took the opportunity of his vacations to visit monasteries throughout Europe, including St. Gallen and Cluny, and searched through their libraries for ancient manuscripts of classical Roman literature. He rediscovered and introduced to the world through his fellow humanists many works, including Cicero (parts of the Oratory), Quintilian, Valerius Flaccus (parts), Asconius, Festus, Lucretius, Statius (Silvae), and Manilius.

イタリアの人文主義者。アレッツォ近郊に生まれ，フィレンツェに出てサルターティに兄事して古典ラテン語の名文家と成り，教皇庁に書記の職を得た。コンスタンツ公会議への随行や休暇の機会をとらえて，ザンクト･ガレンやクリュニーをはじめヨーロッパ各地の修道院を訪れ，蔵書の中からローマ古典文学の古写本を探し集めた。彼が再発見し人文主義者仲間を通じて世に送り出した古典作家は，キケロ(弁論の一部)，クインティリアヌス，ウァレリウス･フラックス(部分)，アスコニウス，フェストゥス，ルクレティウス，スタティウス(《詩叢(シルウァエ)》)，マニリウスなど多数にのぼっている。
