A perennial carnivorous plant of the Droseraceae family (illustration) that preys on small animals by closing two separate leaf blades resembling split bivalve shells. There is one species in one genus. It is also called Venus flytrap or Flytrap. In Japan and Europe, it is cultivated as an ornamental plant. The stem is short and spreads horizontally underground near the surface. Several leaves form a rosette on the ground, but some individuals have leaves that stand up. 二枚貝を割ったような,2片に分かれた葉身を閉じて小動物を捕食する,モウセンゴケ科の多年生食虫植物(イラスト)。1属1種。ハエジゴク,ハエトリソウともいう。日本や欧米では観賞植物として栽培されている。茎は短く,地表に近い土中を横にはう。数枚の葉が地面にロゼットをつくるが,個体によって葉が立ちあがるものもある。4~5月,長さ15~30cmの花茎を1~5本直立し,散形~集散花序に4~10個の白色の花をつける。
