A type of silk fabric. Raw silk of roughly the same thickness is woven in a plain weave with one or two warp strands and two or three weft strands. During the Edo period, high-quality, heavy silk was called habutae, while lighter silk used for linings came to be called plain silk, and generally came to refer to the lining of Japanese clothing. Silk dyed with turmeric and then red with safflower is called red silk (momi). Recently, the name plain silk is rarely used because of the large amount of synthetic fibers used.
