Imai Isshiken Sofu - Imai Isshiken Sofu

Dates of birth and death unknown. Artist of the early Edo period of Ikebana. A drawing of the "pine, bamboo and plum" flower is included in "Heikagunsai" published in 1770. He is generally considered to be the founder of the Koryu school because "Koryu" appears for the first time in the school's name, but details of his life are unknown. However, some of his views are revealed, such as Sekimoto Rion, who claims to be the 4th head of the Koryu school, stating in "Sakura no Shizuku" that "a man named Imai Isshiken Sofu came from Kyoto to Tobu and lived in the grounds of Kanda Myojin Shrine." Also, in "Koryu Ikebana Guide" (1791) by Imai Isshiken Sofu, which was discovered in the Showa era, he asserts that Ikebana is a free and natural form of expression.

生没年不詳。江戸のいけ花創成期の作家。明和(めいわ)7年（1770）刊の『瓶花群載(へいかぐんさい)』のなかに、「松竹梅」の花図が収録されている。流派名に「古流」が初見されるところから、一般に古流の始祖とされているが、伝記の詳細は不明。ただ古流4代家元ととなえる関本理恩(りおん)が、『桜の雫(しずく)』のなかで、「京都より一志軒今井宗普といへる人東武に下り神田明神の地内に住し」と述べていることや、また昭和年代になって発見された今井一志軒宗普の『古流生花指南(こりゅういけばなしなん)』（1791）のなかでは、生花が自由で自然な表現形式であることを主張しているなど、その一端が明らかにされている。
