1850‐1936 French chemist. Born in Paris as the son of a mining inspector. Graduated from the École Polytechnique and the Ecole des Mines, he became a professor at the Ecole des Mines in 1877. He became a professor at the Sorbonne in 1907. Developing from his research on cement, he derived the law of chemical equilibrium known as Le Châtelier's law in 1884, which contributed greatly to the rationalization of the chemical industry. His research achievements were always linked to the practical application of chemistry, covering the burning and hardening of cement, the combustion and explosion of gases, and changes in the state of alloys.
