...A few leaves usually develop in early spring, then flower stalks emerge in May and June, and numerous small flowers bloom in globular umbels. The main species include the tall Allium giganteum Regel (native to Iran, large, deep purple flowers, with over 2,000 small flowers) (illustration), Allium schubertii Zucc. (native to Palestine, large pale purple flowers, medium-sized), Allium sphaerocephalum L. (commonly known as the red-crowned crest, native to Western Europe and Iran, reddish purple, small, dwarf), Allium oleophilum Meyer (native to the Caucasus, pink-pink), and Allium karataviense Regel (native to Turkey, white to pale pink-green, large bulbs). They are usually planted in October or November in well-drained, sunny soil, spaced about twice the diameter of the bulbs apart and covered deeply with soil.
