Yawatasou - Yawatasou

Japanese: ヤワタソウ - やわたそう

A perennial herb of the Saxifragaceae family (illustration) that grows on moist forest floors along valleys. The rhizome is short and thick with large basal leaves with long stalks. The leaf blade is shield-shaped, circular or oval, 20-30 cm in diameter, 7-13 shallow lobes, somewhat deeply incised at the base, and has low serrations at the edges. From May to July, it produces a flower stalk 30-60 cm tall, with pale yellow flowers in a cyme at the end. The flower stalk usually has two alternate leaves with short stalks. The calyx tube is shallowly bell-shaped, 5-8 mm in diameter, and the lower half is fused to the ovary.

谷沿いの湿った林床に生えるユキノシタ科の多年草（イラスト）。根茎は短く，肥厚し，長い柄をもつ大型の根出葉がある。葉身は楯状につき，円形または卵円形，直径20～30cm，7～13浅裂し，基部はやや深く切れ込み，ふちには低い鋸歯がある。5～7月，高さ30～60cmの花茎を出し，先に集散花序をつくって淡黄色の花をつける。花茎には普通2枚の短い柄をもつ葉が互生する。萼筒は浅い鐘形で，直径5～8mm，下半部は子房と合着する。
