Le Cid (English spelling)

Le Cid (English spelling)
A play by the French playwright Corneille. A tragicomedy in verse in five acts. It first appeared in 1637. It was based on the Spanish play The Youth of El Cid by Guillen de Castro, but Corneille removed the redundant parts, created a simple and clear plot, and focused on the psychology and conflicts of the characters, marking a step towards French classical drama. The play is set in 11th century Seville. The protagonist, Rodrigue, has his family's honor tarnished by the father of his lover, Chimène, and after much anguish, he overcomes his love with heroic willpower and defeats his lover's father in a duel. At one point, Chimène also seeks his death as her enemy, but their love only grows stronger and they promise to spend their future together.
