A town in Iwate County in western Iwate Prefecture. It reaches Mt. Iwate to the north and the border with Akita Prefecture to the west, and the Shizukuishi Basin, into which the Shizukuishi River flows, opens up to the east. The Akita Shinkansen (Tazawako Line) runs through the town. Rice farming is the main industry, but livestock farming and horticulture are also practiced. It is home to Koiwai Farm, Tsunagi and Oushuku hot springs, and the Oiwaya cave (a natural monument) in Kakkonda, and is a base for climbing Mt. Iwate and Mt. Komagatake.
