Gravity Probe

A geophysical survey method that estimates underground structures from the distribution of gravity by taking advantage of the fact that gravity values at the earth's surface (gravity anomalies) are affected by anomalies in underground structures. It is mainly used to explore anticlinal structures that may be potential oil reservoirs, and more recently has also been used to explore underground deposits such as ruins. In addition to measurements on land, gravity meters can be sunk to the seabed on continental shelves and moved around and measured by remote control from a ship.

地表における重力の値（重力異常）が地下構造の異常に影響されるのを利用して，重力の分布から地下構造を推定する物理探査法。主として油層形成の可能性のある背斜構造の探査に利用され，最近では遺跡など地下埋蔵物の探査にも使用される。地上での測定のほか，大陸棚などでは，重力計を海底に沈め，船上からの遠隔操作で移動測定することもできる。
