Born: June 13, 1763, Santos Died April 6, 1838, Niterói. Brazilian politician and leader of the independence movement. After graduating from the University of Coimbra in Portugal, he became a professor of geology at the same university. In 1819, he returned to his homeland and became a leader of the independence movement. In 1822, he proposed independence to Dom Pedro (later Pedro I), which directly led to the declaration of independence on September 7. After independence, he handled the difficult situation as prime minister, but did not get along with Emperor Pedro I and went into exile in France (1823-29). In 1831, he was appointed guardian of the crown prince (later Pedro II), but in 1833, he tried to restore Pedro I to the throne and was overthrown.
