Shuji Terayama

Japanese: 寺山修司 - てらやましゅうじ
Shuji Terayama

Poet, tanka writer, playwright, screenwriter, and film director. Born December 10, 1935 in Aomori Prefecture. Dropped out of the Japanese Literature Department of the Faculty of Education at Waseda University. While at Aomori High School, he founded the haiku magazine "Facon," and, through the kindness of Nakamura Kusatao and others, organized the National Student Haiku Conference in 1953 (Showa 28). The following year, in 1954, he entered Waseda University, where he won the 2nd Tanka Kenkyu Newcomer Award for 50 poems in the "Chekhov Festival," and his youthful lyricism and bold expressions caused a great sensation. In the same year (1954), he developed nephrosis. In 1959, he started writing radio dramas at the recommendation of Shuntaro Tanikawa, and in 1960 he wrote the screenplay for Masahiro Shinoda's "Dry Lake," and in the same year his play "Chi wa Tachimama Nemiteiru" was performed by the Shiki Theatre Company, drawing attention as a transdisciplinary avant-garde artist. In 1967 he organized the theater laboratory "Sajiki" and continued to actively engage in avant-garde theater activities, but he passed away on May 4, 1983, at the age of 47. His poetry collections include "Books in the Sky" (1958) and "Blood and Wheat" (1962), and in the field of broadcasting he wrote "Yamauba" (1964, winner of the Italian Prize) and "Inugami no Onna" (1965, winner of the Kubota Mantaro Prize). His representative stage works include "The Hunchback of Aomori Prefecture" and "Marie of the Fur" (both 1967), the city drama "Human-Powered Plane Solomon" (1970), the city drama "Knock" (1975), and "Nuhi-kun" (1978), and he directed the film "Die in the Countryside" (1974). He left behind avant-garde masterpieces in many fields and lived a life that was not bound by established values.
