…Miike coal was reportedly first discovered on Mt. Inari around 1469 (Bunmei 1), but it wasn't developed until the mid-Edo period, when the Miike clan operated Mt. Inari, and opened Mt. Ikeyama during the Kaei era (1848-54), and the Yanagawa clan opened Mt. Hirano during the Kyoho era (1716-36). The two clans constantly fought over the boundaries of the coal mines, and in 1873 (Meiji 6) the mines were all taken over by the government, and the government-run Miike Mine was established.
