This marine fish belongs to the order Perciformes and family Bogfish. It is found in Toyama and Niigata prefectures on the Sea of Japan side, and in the Pacific Ocean from the coast of Iwate prefecture, through the Kuril Islands and the Bering Sea, to off the coast of Washington state in the United States. Its body is spherical, with scattered bumps about the size of an eye or smaller. There are no wart-like protrusions on the ventral surface of the lower jaw. There is a sucker on the ventral surface that is a modified ventral fin. The first dorsal fin is high and has many bumps. The body is light brown. It usually lives at depths of less than 200 meters, but there are records of it being caught from 575 meters. It only grows to about 10 centimeters in length. It has no edible value.
